Unlike common MACs, mass drivers such as this are commonly used for magnetic lifting, which is the process of getting a payload into orbit through the use of magnetic acceleration of a small payload container. That container is then caught by a station or vessel in orbit, like an extreme version of american football. The Onager can be easily turned into a defensive battery by swapping the payload containers for ferrous tungsten slugs, which are used to devastating effect. The Mark 2488 is capable of accelerating a 15 cm diameter slug to 30 km/s, more than enough to instantly destroy a Phantom dropship, and then cause critical damage to a Covenant CCS class battlecruiser's hull and internal systems.
