F-14 TOMCAT:

• Developed by Grumman in the late 1960s.
• Entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1974.
• Designed as a carrier-based air superiority fighter, long-range interceptor, and fleet defense aircraft.

Features
• Variable-sweep wings (swing wings) → could sweep back for speed or extend for maneuverability/landing.
• Advanced radar system (AN/AWG-9) with the ability to track multiple targets.
• Carried the AIM-54 Phoenix missile → could engage enemy aircraft up to 100 miles away.
• Two crew: pilot + Radar Intercept Officer (RIO).

Combat History
• Saw action in the Cold War, Gulf of Sidra clashes with Libya, Operation Desert Storm (1991), Iraq (2003), and Afghanistan (2001).
• Famously operated by the U.S. Navy and also exported to Iran (which still uses them today).

Fame
• Became world-famous in 1986 thanks to Top Gun (Maverick’s jet).
• Symbol of U.S. naval air power during the late Cold War.

Retirement
• Retired from U.S. service in 2006, replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
• Iran remains the only operator still flying F-14s (from pre-revolution deliveries).

In short:
The F-14 Tomcat was one of the most iconic Cold War fighters — fast, deadly, and stylish — a true legend
