The American F-19 "Thundercrash" was the first ever attempt at a copy of Germany's Me-163 program. The aircraft was the first of its kind featuring post Korean War technology. The aircraft also featured a unique airframe which consisted of both the F-22 Raptor and Mirage Mk III signature designs. Designed to be a short-range bomber interceptor like the Me-163 itself, it had to have very powerful engines and a ridiculous climb rate. Though rocket propulsion was clearly out of the question, an idea was sparked to propel it with more powerful turbofan engines. Its clever Delta-wing could withstand speeds of over 1000mph. However, the aircraft only carried enough fuel to power itself at full throttle for around 10 minutes. Being a high-altitude bomber interceptor, it was fitted with 2 x 20mm Mk214 cannons, 2 x Guardian J7 homing missiles and 4 x C12 Interceptor radar-guided missiles. Although it performed well in simulations, pilots reportedly stated that the aircraft was very unstable if it had heavier weight on one side of the wing. That being said, it was technologically the most advanced aircraft at the time.
