IJN Yamato - Type 94 46cm Triple Turret

9,588 NavalGunnery  4 days ago

The type 94 46cm are the largest guns mounted onto a Battleship, the only ships to fully yield it are the two legendary sisterships Yamato, and Musashi of the Imperial Japanese Navy which saw their end during the days of World War two, cementing the superiority of Naval Aviation over the aging concept of the Battleship

Fujimi Scale model of the Type 94 + interior

Officially designated as the 45 caliber Type 94 40 cm Gun / 四五口径九四式四〇糎砲 by the Imperial Japanese Navy in attempts to hide its true diameter of 460mm / 18.1 inch, the guns were the pinnacle of Battleship Armaments that became a reality, a marvel of engineering that made it truly a fascinating hot spot of discussion amongst naval and engineering fans alike

The gun could elevate from -5 to +45 degrees, and could fire a ~3,200lb / ~1,450kg Type 91 Armor Piercing Projectile up to 2,559 fps / 780m/s every 30 or so seconds depending on initial firing elevation

With the Armor Piercing Shot, the Yamato and Musashi were also armed with the San-Shiki Shell which were Incindiery Shrapnel projectiles primarily used against aerial targets, though usually trivialized to "fireworks" due to their overall inefectiveness even in the smaller calibers they were built with.

Besides the Yamato and Musashi, the guns were also carried by the Auxiliary vessel Kashino, a purpose built Auxiliary ship made to transport disassembled spare parts of the turret.

Accuracy was further enhanced with a delay that seperates the firing of the central guns with the outer guns, to quote NavWeaps:

"Most references state that the center gun had a 0.080 second firing delay to reduce shell dispersion. This is from "US Naval Technical Mission to Japan report O-45 (N)." However, more recent works state that the center gun had a 0.300 second delay. This would result in a separation of about 755 feet (230 m) between the shells from the outer guns and the shell from the center gun."

This delay and seperation minimized the dispersion of the shots as it dissipates the blast pressure of the outer guns before it affects the central guns.

This build aims to be a part efficient representation of the Type 94 gun turret, whilst also standing as a teaser for innovations that are to come from future projects, and with such, hopes to inspire other naval builders in enhancing their proficiency in not just the very building process, but also in the realization of possibilities that one can achieve with the proficient utilization of in-game programming tools and a pint of creativity.

This section details the various controls found for this build

The controls remain simple for this turret, with the majority of Innovations being primarily automatic.

Another note

be informed that the cannon activations are bounded by the bearing and elevation relative to that of the pointer's data, this is issued to mitigate misfires when the turrets are still aiming or turning.

Below this section, highlights the various features this build provides

The build features a handful of features that makes it stand out to many gun turrets that have been built in Simpleplanes, be it other gun turrets, or the same Type 94 46cm gun.

All with the help of Funky Trees and creativity, this build contains the following features.

Individualized Reload Sequence

Adjustable Stick Sensitivity

Realistic Traverse/Elevation Rate

Turret Traverse Rate = 2°/s
Gun Elevation Rate = 8°/s

Note that Turret Traverse and Elevation is not the same as the pointer's rates.

Interchangeable Fuse Types

Custom Gunfire Sound

Well I cant really provide sound with a GIF here... So I'll just inform you that if you ever want to hear each boom barrel per barrel, I suggest tuning the cannon part's firing Delay, I'd suggest 0.4 seconds but its up to ya.

This concludes this post, I hope its come to pique your interests with the possibilities that Naval Builds can achieve out side of point and boom, even from us mobile players bounded by the insufferable lag of our potato devices, cya next time!
