Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 Fishbed

The MiG-21F Fishbed is a supersonic short-range interceptor fighter and is the second generation production aircraft of the popular MiG-21 series. The prototype of this aircraft, the E-5 (pronounced Ye-5 ) first flew in 1955 and appeared before the public at the Soviet Aviation Day at Tushino Airfield, Moscow in June 1956. During the Vietnam War , this aircraft was used to attack the United States aircraft fleet , also used in the Arab - Israeli war , including the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War , the Indo-Pakistan war , the Yemen crisis and various wars in various parts of the third world , so it is rightly nicknamed the AK-47 of the air , or sharp pebbles from the east because initially the West, especially the United States, underestimated this aircraft. More than 30 countries in the world, including allies of the United States, use this aircraft. At least 15 versions of the MiG 21 have been produced, some of which were produced outside the Soviet Union . Approximately 8000 of these aircraft have been produced.

The MiG-21 jet fighter was a continuation of Soviet jet fighters, starting with the subsonic MiG-15 and MiG-17, and the supersonic MiG-19. A number of experimental Mach 2 Soviet designs were based on nose intakes with either swept-back wings, such as the Sukhoi Su-7, or tailed deltas, of which the MiG-21 would be the most successful.

Development of what would become the MiG-21 began in the early 1950s when Mikoyan OKB finished a preliminary design study for a prototype designated Ye-1 in 1954. This project was very quickly reworked when it was determined that the planned engine was underpowered; the redesign led to the second prototype, the Ye-2. Both these and other early prototypes featured swept wings. The first prototype with the delta wings found on production variants was the Ye-4. It made its maiden flight on 16 June 1955 and its first public appearance during the Soviet Aviation Day display at Moscow's Tushino airfield in July 1956.
In the West, due to the lack of available information, early details of the MiG-21 often were confused with those of similar Soviet fighters of the era. In one instance, Jane's All the World's Aircraft 1960–1961 listed the "Fishbed" as a Sukhoi design and used an illustration of the Su-9 'Fishpot'.
Due to the mass production, the aircraft was very cheap: the MiG-21MF, for example, was cheaper than the BMP-1.[8] The F-4 Phantom's cost was several times higher than MiG-21.

I've once seen the Lancer-R model of the MiG-21, surprisingly, even in the dawn of 5th gen fighters, the MiG-21 could still be a formidable opponent, then again we can say that to many of other 3rd gen fighters anyway.

    Very nice build!
