Sukhoi Su-47 Berkut (Russian: Golden Eagle; NATO reporting name: Firkin) is an experimental Russian technology demonstrator aircraft developed by Sukhoi in the late 1990s.
Key Characteristics
Forward-Swept Wings: Its most striking feature, providing exceptional agility at subsonic speeds and allowing for maneuvers at very high angles of attack.
Composite Materials: Extensive use of advanced materials was required to withstand the massive structural stress generated by the inverted wing design (aeroelasticity).
Fly-By-Wire: It utilized a multi-channel digital control system to maintain stability for an aerodynamically unstable jet.
Technical Specifications
Crew: 1 (Pilot).
Top Speed: Mach 2.21 (approx. 1,367 mph / 2,200 km/h) at altitude.
Engines: 2 Soloviev D-30F11 turbofans (later planned to use AL-41F engines with thrust vectoring).
Armament: Equipped with one internal 30mm GSh-30-1 cannon and internal weapons bays for air-to-air missiles, though the aircraft was never armed for actual combat operations.
Status and Legacy
Experimental: The Su-47 never entered mass production. Only one prototype unit was ever built to serve as a flying laboratory.
Development of the Su-57: While the forward-swept wing design was not continued for production fighters, the avionics, composite materials, and stealth systems tested on the Su-47 laid the groundwork for Russia's fifth-generation fighter, the Sukhoi Su-57.
Condition in 2025: As of 2025, the Su-47 remains one of the most iconic aircraft designs in aerospace history. The aircraft occasionally appears as a static display at airshows like MAKS in Russia to showcase past engineering innovations.
