• In 1972, Avro Aviation Industries began development of a supersonic strike and ground attack aircraft, in response to inquiries from various foreign countries like Iran, North Korea, Israel, and Cuba. All wanted a fast strike aircraft that performed ground attack and low level penetration missions without compromising agility, payload, or survivability.
The Avro Onslaught took lessons from aircraft such as the F105, SPECAT Jaguar, MIG-27, and A4 Skyhawk, in order to inform the creation of a twin engine, high wing, Mach 3 capable aircraft with excellent low level high speed flight characteristics. The Onslaught is capable of carrier operations with catapult launches, arial refueling, and has an air to air capability in the form of short range and long range radar missiles. Any resemblance to the F4 Phantom is purely coincidental. After the tragic loss of the first prototype due to uncontrolled pitch coupling combined with high speed yaw, an array of ventral fins were fitted to ensure rock solid stability up to the design limit of mach 3.3. Due to aerodynamic limitations, 45,000 feet is the maximum safe ceiling for the Onslaught. For some reason North Korea wanted a range of at least 6,442 miles so Avro obliged, giving a max speed range of 8000 miles at mach 3.3 and 45,000 feet
• With a true wing loading 111 pounds per square foot, best take off is full flaps and rotation around 170mph.
• Carrys modded missiles with short lock times, can carry 1 cleaver missile in a recessed space in the center fuselage and two more ground attack missiles semi-submerged. The current configuration is for a maritime/surface to air strike role with a secondary fighter stand off or interception mission • All ranges are with drop tanks installed, removable for an additional 2 hardpoints
• Lo-lo-lo subsonic range 60% THROTTLE 3417
• Subsonic ferry range 15% throttle at fl 310 8,462 miles
• Lo-lo-lo 100% throttle 3236 miles
• Hi-hi-hi max throttle max speed (mach 3.3 FL450) 8000 miles
