History: In 1961, the Soviet Union realized that the nuclear-capable light bombers they had at the time were either underpowered or underequipped to fight the North American A-5 Vigilante. So, Mikoyan-Gurevich designed the MiG-22 to combat the American threat. The first prototype flew in March of 1962 with the first aircraft going into production in 1963. It had a top speed over 800mph, making it one of the fastest bombers in the Red Air Force arsonel at the time. It stayed in service with the Red Air Force until 1973 and in Ukraine, Poland, and other satellite states until (at the latest) 1989.
