History

The F.T.R.C. 43E “Shorty”, whose name stuck even with the newer models, was an improved version of the old, but reliable F.T.R.C. 43 (1935), the aircraft the F.T.R.C. 62 was mainly meant to replace. 47 F.T.R.C. 43s were, with some difficulty, converted to this new variant, and around 350-400 were produced from 1943-1946. They included a heavily reshaped fuselage, radar equipment for the rear gunner for night and improved navigation, the mk.9 “simplified” gun sight modification and changed cockpit, an improved engine, and a less than reliable automatic gear retract system, among other things. Production F.T.R.C. 43Es immediately entered service in 1943 alongside the F.T.R.C. 62 in the newly formed Dive Attack Squad 189th, and were relatively respected by their crews, who only noted that it “flew like a rock” with payload equipped. (Yes, I’m too lazy to ruin the flight model a third time.) The aircraft retired in 1948, but saw great success throughout WW2, as well as the 1935 variant, and others.
