P38 KAI “YAMATO HUNTER”
As a naval experimental variant of the P38,it was deployed aboard the USS Yorktown during the Battle of Midway. Before the Yorktown sank, an unnamed pilot managed to take off and engage in combat, assisting in the destruction of four Japanese main aircraft carriers, one heavy bomber (specifically the Ayako heavy bomber), and over 50 fighters and attack aircraft. The pilot subsequently volunteered for a raid deep behind Japanese lines. After rearming, repainting with combat records, and repairs, the aircraft departed for the raid. Its whereabouts remain unknown, but it appears to have caused significant disruption within Japanese forces.
