MADE FOR ALPINE AIRCRAFT CHALLENGE

INTRO

The Vought F4U Corsair was an American fighter aircraft, capable of operating based on aircraft carriers, which was used mainly in World War II and the Korean War. Demand for the model surpassed the ability of the company Vought to manufacture it, causing many units to be produced by the Goodyear and Brewster factories. The total number of aircraft manufactured reached 12,571, covering the longest production period for a piston fighter in the United States (1942-1953).

HISTORY

In 1938, the United States Navy opened competition for the construction of light fighters, demanding for the single engines a minimum range of 1600 km and stall speed not above 110 km / h. Still in 1938, the Navy signed the contract for the manufacture of the XF4U-1 prototype, with the planned use of the 18-cylinder Pratt & Whitney XR2800 Double Wasp radial engine. When built, the prototype had the most powerful engine, the largest propeller and the largest wingspan of any fighter in the world so far. The prototype made its first flight on May 29, 1940, with Lyman A. Bullard Jr. in charge. The inaugural flight proceeded normally until an early landing was necessary, due to failure of the elevator compensators due to vibration.

Still in 1940, the F4U Corsair became the first single-engine fighter in the US to exceed a speed of 400 miles per hour (640 km / h). The mark had already been reached before only by the twin engine P-38 Lightning. Tests with the Corsair prototype faced problems with high-speed diving flight and stall recovery, forcing Americans to postpone the start of series production of the fighter.

Reports from Europe at the time showed that the original armament would be insufficient, with two .30 and two .50 machine guns installed on the aircraft (7.62 mm and 12.5 mm calibers, respectively). The Navy requested reinforcement of the fighter's armament, which now has three .50 machine guns on each wing, totaling six devices, greatly increasing the chance of the F4U Corsair taking down enemy planes.

The Navy began its own tests with the XF4U-1 prototype in 1941, and in June of that year, it signed the contract for the manufacture of 584 F4U Corsair fighters. The first production specimen flew in June 1942, which was considered a great achievement, due to the greater complexity required of fighters loaded on aircraft carriers.

    Review

Airplane performs well. Maneuverable, good firepower and armament, excellent engines, and most importantly, checks most of the standards set for Alpine crafts. It has short landings, good gliding capabilities, has a decent gear, and some okay landing capabilities. Details are good, but airfoil could be improved with custom control surfaces. Nevertheless, I greatly enjoyed this aircraft. Good job!
