The Il-76 transport aircraft (Russian: ИЛ-76, English: IL-76, NATO reporting name: Candid, commonly known as Ilyushin Il-76) is a four-engine large Soviet strategic transport aircraft utilized for both military and civilian purposes. The Il-76 was developed by the Soviet Ilyushin Aviation Group (Ильюшина or Ilyushin, now part of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation) in the 1970s, with the military transport project proposed and designed in the late 1960s. As the An-12, the mainstay of Soviet military air transport, had become inadequate in payload and range, the Soviet Union urgently needed a new military transport aircraft with longer range, greater payload, and higher speed. Consequently, they decided to develop the Il-76, which in both design and payload capacity could surpass the American C-141 heavy transport aircraft, thereby addressing the limitations of Soviet military airlift capability. The Il-76 is one of the world's most successful heavy transport aircraft, having been used by or currently in service with over 38 countries, and operated by more than 850 operators. The Soviet Union (and later Russia) is the largest military user, while Ukraine and Belarus are the largest users of the civilian version.
