The AX project, from 1976, was a proposal by Embraer and Aermacchi for a Ground attack aircraft with subsonic performance for the Brazilian Air Force.
In May 1977 the project was revised, receiving improvements and additional details. The end result was the publication of document PT-AX/107, issued in May 1977 and submitted to the Ministry of Aeronautics (MAEr).
The project was designated MB.340 and was very detailed. Even the division of labor between the two manufacturers was defined. The Brazilian company would be responsible for 1/3 of the program and costs, being responsible for the wing sections, empennage and structure fatigue tests. While Aermacchi would answer for the other 2/3 and would produce the fuselage, onboard systems, static and weapons tests. Four prototypes were planned (two in each country) and could be built as early as 1978. In the second half of 1977, a team of Embraer engineers went to Aermacchi's headquarters in Italy to discuss the project.
Only the “green light” from the MAer was awaited for the start of work. However, the Minister of Aeronautics at that time decided to freeze the project, claiming issues related to costs and deadlines.
The AX project was revived a few years later, however the MB-340 was dropped. Aermacchi, which was also participating in the AMX program in Italy, saw the similarities between the two projects and proposed the start of negotiations between the two countries. In 1980 the Brazilian authorities announced that they would participate in the AMX program, but Brazil's decision to participate in the project was made official only one year after the first announcement.
