Sukhoi I-M-90

And finally, after a very long two weeks, I’ve uploaded a plane. School really took up most of my time as it somehow magically got harder. The time that I had to spare was consumed trying to iron out all the faults that this aircraft had and made.

This airplane doesn't have very good performance. I think this is what it would be like in War Thunder.

Important: If the front air intake falls off, grab the part and reattach it. It will only hold on until you press “exit” the next time. Take off is very tricky. Make sure to counteract the ground spin with just enough yaw.

Features:

  • Six .30 cal ShKAS machine guns
  • Custom landing gear
  • Custom exhaust
  • Flaps

History:

In April 1940, P.O. Sukhoi addressed S.N. Shishkin, the chief of 11 GU NCAU, to order for the experimental department of Plant No. 135 two M-90 engines, motivating by saying that “... The required extension is 300-400 mm should provide the ability to install a special cowling elongated forward. Normal engine cowling with a normal covering can not be applied to the aircraft at a speed of 650-700 km / h, because local supersonic speeds lead to an increase in drag several times ... ”.

By July 1940, the design bureau completed the development of a draft design of a single-seat fighter with an air-cooled engine M-90 (1750 hp) with two TK-1 turbo-compressors. According to TTT, the aircraft was intended to conduct active air combat, as well as to perform tasks in cooperation with ground forces.
In the recall of the Air Force Institute for the draft design it was noted:

  • The project presented by the designer as a whole is quite real, the flight-tactical data by calculation are basically justified and provided with a constructive scheme and the presence of a powerful motor.
    Taking into account:
  • Relatively low rates of maximum speeds of the projected aircraft
  • The construction of the aircraft can be completed no earlier than February - March 1941, while a similar I-185 M-90 aircraft has already been built.
  • The construction of the aircraft with the M-90 and two TK-1 turbochargers designed by comrade P.O. Sukhoi is considered impractical.

In conclusion, it was stated that it was not possible to approve the draft design, and the chief designer was asked: “... to send for the near future the work of his design bureau to fine-tune the production aircraft of the BB-1 with the M-88 in the VMG part and maximum speed modifications of the BB-1 aircraft with the M-81, M-90, for the construction of the pilot OBS aircraft with the M-71, for the fine-tuning of the experienced BB-2 aircraft with the M-88, and the I-330 fighter with the M-105.”

August 4, 1940 The conclusion on the draft design of a single-seat fighter with an M-90 and two TK-1 turbochargers was approved by the Chief of the Red Army Main Directorate of the Air Force, Lieutenant General P.V. Rychagov.

According to its scheme, design and technology, the aircraft was an analogue of the I-185 fighter, the fuselage was wooden, and the wing was all-metal. In order to reduce drag, the project envisaged a strongly elongated and pointed engine hood, which required an extension of the engine shaft. Turbochargers were installed behind the pilot on the sides of the fuselage. This arrangement made it possible to avoid blinding the pilot with exhaust gases during night flights. Exhaust pipes from the engine and air ducts from the TK-1 lay outside along the sides of the fuselage and were enclosed in metal covers. Radiators were placed on the sides of the fuselage. On the turbine parts of the turbochargers, so-called “reactors” were fastened to increase the reactive effect created by the exhaust gases.

A 300 kg fuel tank was placed under the pilot's seat. To increase the combat survivability of the tank, it was filled with exhaust gases. A suspension of an additional gasoline tank for 200 kg of fuel was envisaged.

The aircraft’s armament consisted of four .30 cal ShKAS synchronized machine guns, placed in the center section, and two .30 cal ShKAS machine guns outside the propeller disk. The total ammunition was 3000 rounds. To protect the pilot, an armored headrest was made of cemented steel with a thickness of 8.65 mm, with a cut off upper part, replaced by transparent armor.

This remarkable aircraft was cancelled when it was soon realized how troublesome the M-90 turned out to be and could not be fixed.

Marek Rys from the Secret Projects UK Forum made a 3-D model of this paper project. Here is his pictures and his comment:

”Just finished Sukhoi's high altitude fighter with M-90 engine and two TK-1 superchargers. Designed about 1940/1941 as study project during Su-1/Su-3 (I-135, I-330) program. Plane had to be able to reach ceiling about 13250 m (12500 m by calculations NII WWS specialists) and speed 670-690 km/h at 10000 m.
