The Vultee XP-81 was designed right after WWII. It featured a top speed of over 500 miles per hour and could reach altitudes of over 35,000 feet. It was bigger than the P-47, P-38, and P-51, all of which it was designed to replace. It had one propeller engine in the front and one turbojet engine in the rear. It was a single-seat fighter and never made it past the prototype stage.
