United Aircraft TurboTrain (Amtrak)

23.6k SpartanSR91  yesterday

Originally a 1950's design concept from the Chesapeake & Ohio, the United Aircraft TurboTrain was an early gas turbine powered high-speed trainset that operated in North America from 1968 to 1982. Each of the two power cars were powered by a series of Pratt & Whitney PT6 turbine engines downrated to 300 horsepower. Dubbed 'ST6', these turbine engines directly drove the leading bogie's axles, and were significantly smaller than the diesel engine blocks from the original design blueprints. Instead of a complete redesign, some portion of the power car was converted into passenger seating. During tests, prototypes reached a top speed of 170.8 mph (274.9 kph), but the TurboTrain was limited to 120 mph (193 kph) in regular service.

Controls:

Throttle: Engine Power

VTOL: Does nothing, looked for ''VTOL'' in .xml file, no results

LandingGear: Change Direction

Brake: Apply Brakes

Additional Notes:

  • Scratchoza's SPR - Map Plugin, or hpgbproductions' North Railway Map is REQUIRED for this trainset's normal operation. (Let me know if you would like me to upload a 'road train' version of this in the future)

  • The HUD is calibrated for hpgbproductions' North Railway Map (Warnings occur above the line's top speed)

  • This build tops out at 130 mph (209 kph) on straight, level track

  • Just like the original prototype, this build uses an active tilting mechanism to navigate curves at high speeds. (Will not stop derailments)

  • The tilting mechanism is limited to 50% power at speeds below 60 mph (96.5 kph), and only 15% at less than 30 mph (48.2 kph).

  • Some very sharp curves will cause the tilt mechanism to derail the trainset at full power, slow down to less than 60 mph if you encounter one of these curves. (You have been warned!)

  • There are orbit cameras in each power car (Power car A is the 'forward facing' locomotive)

  • If you are not sure which direction you're heading, check the exterior lights.
