CONVAIR AC-36 A.G.A.U. Son of Peacemaker

1,971 moonbat  2.8 years ago

The Convair AC-36 Anti-Ground-Aerial-Unit nicknamed "Son of Peacemaker" is an attack aircraft like no other. In August 1949, just one year after the first flight of the U.S. Air Forces new bomber, (the Convair B-36), the NAVY approaches Convair with a proposal. The Navy needed a short-range, close support, bomber, and heavy attack aircraft. Something with a similar load capacity to the B-36, but it needed to be able to be launched from an aircraft carrier and have a top speed of 500+ MPH. Convair came back with the proposal for the AC-36 "Son of Peacemaker". The engineers at Convair stripped the B-36 of her huge 230ft wing and replaced them with a set of tandem wings coming in just under 100ft. The fuselage was also modified and the tail was enlarged. The AC-36 was powered by 8 jet engines and could shut 4 of them down during cruise to lessen the fuel burn. The AC-36 was armed with 14 forward-facing gattling guns and 2 400mm cannons. An additional 400mm cannon was mounted in a turret on top of the fuselage. It also carried an impressive bomb load as well as air to air and air to surface missiles. Fully loaded and with all 8 engines at full throttle, no catapult was needed to take off from the carrier deck. The landing was a different problem. May 26, 1951, One prototype was landing with a full bomb load and the arresting cable snapped under the load. The XAC-36 swerved off the deck and caught a smaller fighter on its way over the deck. The fighter hit the Bombay doors and set off the payload. All 10 crew members and 15 carrier crewmen were killed in the accident. The AC-36 would have 3 similar accidents before being removed from service in July 1962.
