Background

The Greyhound E-6 Storm Eye is a Federation airborne early warning and control aircraft developed by Greyhound Systems. The E-6 provides all-weather surveillance, command, control, and communications, and is used primarily by the Royal Federation Air Force. The E-6 is distinguished by the distinctive rotating radar dome above the fuselage.

The E-6's airframe is a heavily modified Greyhound E-3 model. The aircraft can fly un-refueled to distances of 8,200km or 11 hours of flight. The newer E-6 are equipped with newer CFM56-2 turbofan engines, and these can fly for about 13 hours or about (9,000 km). The Storm Eye's range and on-station time can be increased through air-to-air refueling and the crews can work in shifts by the use of an on-board crew rest and meals area.

When deployed, the E-6 monitors an assigned area of the battlefield and provides information for commanders of air operations to gain and maintain control of the battle. But when used as an air defense asset, E-6s can detect, identify, and track airborne enemy forces far from the boundaries of the Federation and allied countries and can direct fighter-interceptor aircraft to these targets. When in use for support of air-to-ground operations, the E-6 can provide direct information needed for interdiction, reconnaissance, airlift, and close-air support for friendly ground forces.

The E-6 Storm Eye can track more than 3,000 targets simultaneously (while at the same time, detecting 25,000 simultaneously) to a ranges exceeding 750 km and simultaneously guide 100-150 air-to-air intercepts or air-to-surface engagements.
