The SP Aviation SP 59 A-2 was a jet fighter first flown in late 1942 for the Krakabloa Air Force. The goal for the aircraft was to counter Wright Isle Air Force’s F-138 Interceptors to allow allied bombers to fly through to bombing points. It was the first turbojet aircraft to fly and engage in combat however it was plagued with issues causing delays in mass production and the eventual cancellations due to better designs being tested.
The SP 59 A-2 was powered by a pair of JMA JT-1A Turbojet engines which was known for having a good power : weight ratio however it proved to be unreliable and very inefficient. The SP 59 was also very heavy compared to other aircraft at the time mostly because of the engines and weapons. As a result, it was only able to reach a top speed of 605 Km/h or 375 MPH at 3000 m (~10000 ft) when fully loaded and was able to climb to a max altitude of around 10000 m (~30000 ft). It also featured a very unique landing gear mechanism which was at times, prone to failure.
The SP 59 A-2 was armed with 2x 20mm MG/CL cannons and 1x 50mm T-50 Tank cannon. It carried 400 rounds for the 20mm cannons in a unique configuration consisting of a single ammo box housing the 2 magazines for the 2 guns. The 50mm cannon had 40 rounds in a much more conventional magazine style.
By the middle of 1943, the SP 59 had been overtaken by faster and simpler airplanes and all remaining SP 59s were scrapped and/or abandoned.
The Build
It isn’t the best and I’m not the best builder but I’m proud of it. There are definitely improvements to be made but it is my second finished aircraft build. It does need rudder input when taking off and landing as it veers off to the side but once airborne it flies well.
It features:
- (poorly) modelled guns which can be seen by opening two doors via two buttons (one just in front of the landing gear and one in front of the cockpit windshield.
- an attempt at modelling landing gear bays
- modelled control surfaces
- modelled cockpit (missing rudder pedals since I don’t know how to make them)
- Unique landing gear doors (definitely a creative decision and not me not knowing how to build proper doors)
- Openable Canopy (activation group is in the instructions
- Custom Engine Exhaust
Activation Groups and some flight details listed in flight instructions.
P.S. If anyone wants to create liveries for it, go ahead but make sure you give proper credit.
I hope you enjoy and have a Great day/night.
