the 121 was built to fill a gap. When the island main line speed limit was raised to 90mph there were no trains in service that could to that. The fastest train in croftien rails fleet could only do 70mph so the 121 was built. with its newly designed diesel electric power train not only did it accelerate faster than anything else on the rails it was also quiter for the passnger in most parts of the train. Even 50 years later a few are still in service. this one here is in its original paint scheme.
