About Swiss Int’l Air Lines:

Swiss International Air Lines AG, stylized as SWISS, is the flag carrier of Switzerland and a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, as well as a Star Alliance member. It operates scheduled services in Europe and to North America, South America, Africa and Asia. Zurich Airport serves as its main hub and Geneva Airport as its secondary hub. The company maintains its registered office and operational headquarters at EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg in Basel, Switzerland. It also maintains offices in Kloten, near Zurich Airport. The airline was formed following the bankruptcy in 2002 of Swissair, Switzerland's then-flag carrier. The new airline was built around what had been Swissair's regional subsidiary, Crossair. Swiss retains Crossair's IATA code LX (Swissair's code was SR). It assumed Swissair's old ICAO code of SWR (Crossair's was CRX), to maintain international traffic rights.

About HB-IWE:

HB-IWE was the 5th MD-11 to be delivered to Swissair (pre-2002), and was the last MD-11 to leave the Swiss (post-2002) fleet. The aircraft was chosen by Swissair because of its long-haul capabilities and large passenger capacity, also allowing comfort. After Swissair became bankrupt, the newly formed Swiss Int’l took over several MD-11’s, including HB-IWE. Some aircraft were painted into the newly formed Swiss Int’l livery, while other’s still beared the Swissair logo, just with the new Swiss titles slapped over. The last Swiss MD-11 revenue flight was operated by this specific aircraft, from Chicago’s O’Hare Int’l airport, to Zurich Int’l.

This specific aircraft was built around June of 1991, is 34.3 years old, and was tested at Long Beach Airport (LGB/KLGB) with the MSN of 48447, and Line Number 464.

This specific aircraft has been in service with the following airlines:
