History of the development: Mhr.Zwk.Kmpfr. Steinadler AMFK-KF10.154A — Heavy multi-role fighter aircraft

Origins of the concept (1965–1967)

In the mid-1960s, the Martorianische Reichsluftwaffe command faced a dilemma. The frontline aviation fleet consisted of highly specialised aircraft: light interceptors, tactical bombers, and reconnaissance aircraft. This created a logistical nightmare, complicated operational planning, and did not meet the new "flexible response" doctrine, which required the air wing to be able to perform multiple tasks in a single sortie. A versatile "workhorse" was needed, capable of gaining air superiority, delivering precision strikes against ground targets, and conducting long-range reconnaissance without requiring a change of squadrons.

In 1967, AMFK presented a concept report proposing the creation of the Reich's first heavy twin-engine multi-role jet fighter. The idea received the highest approval of Kaiser Augustus X, who saw this project as a symbol of technological maturity and economic efficiency.

Start of development (1968)

Work on the KF10.154 project began on 15 March 1968 under the leadership of ambitious designer Dr Claudia Reinhardt, the first woman to head such a large-scale programme at AMFK.

Key design decisions that defined the appearance of the Steinadler:

  1. Twin-engine configuration: Two new HTFTW-278A turbofan engines with increased service life and thrust-to-weight ratio, ensuring safety when flying over the sea/enemy rear and sufficient thrust for take-off with maximum load.
  2. Two-seat cockpit: The second crew member is a weapons operator, necessary for controlling complex radar, target allocation and the use of high-precision air-to-surface weapons in the future. This provided a huge tactical advantage in a busy combat environment.
  3. Record-breaking rapid-fire cannon: Six-barrel LWAK3 Mk.I system with a rate of fire of 6,000 rounds per minute, designed to guarantee the destruction of any target in close combat and effectively engage ground targets.

The long road to perfection (1969–1976)

The project faced unprecedented difficulties. The first flight of the prototype in 1971 nearly ended in disaster due to problems with controllability at low speeds. The integration of the advanced AEAA2 radar and VAS1 optoelectronic system was constantly behind schedule, delaying the testing of the weapon systems.

The main challenge was weight. Designers fought for every kilogram, using the latest LW-Stahl.1515 and titanium alloys, but the aircraft still ended up heavier than planned. This led to an inevitable compromise: the maximum speed was reduced from the planned Mach 2.0 to Mach 1.8, focusing not on pure interception, but on supersonic cruising speed and incredible firepower in manoeuvrable combat.

Despite pressure from the military, who demanded quick results, Dr Reinhardt and the new Kaiser Karl IX (who ascended the throne in 1972) personally refused to accept an "unfinished" product. "The Berkut should not just be an aircraft, it should be a benchmark for generations to come," said the Kaiser.

Breakthrough and adoption (1977)

By 1976, all major problems had been solved. The second batch of pre-production aircraft (KF10.154A1) performed brilliantly in joint exercises with the army and navy. The aircraft demonstrated:

· Ability to conduct long-range patrols with six MSR-Lanze missiles.
· Effective as a strike aircraft with a full complement of KB-Zwerk and MB-Gross bombs.
· Outstanding survivability thanks to redundant systems, armoured cockpit and protected fuel tanks.

By Kaiser's Order No. 33 of 15 September 1977, the heavy multi-role fighter Mhr.Zwk.Kmpfr. Steinadler AMFK-KF10.154A was officially adopted by the Reich Air Force.

Significance and legacy

The Steinadler became the cornerstone of the Reich's aviation in the 1970s and 1980s. It was the first truly universal platform around which all operational planning was built. It combined the power of a fighter, the carrying capacity of a bomber and the range of a reconnaissance aircraft. Together with the high-altitude interceptor "Scharferfalke" (KF13.369A), it formed the ideal "top-bottom" tandem for achieving air superiority.
