The T-72B3M (2016 model, obr.16) is a further deep modernization of the T-72B3, focusing on improvements in fire control, protection, and mobility. It is equipped with the upgraded “Sosna-U” fire-control system, thermal sights, and a new ballistic computer, significantly enhancing day-night accuracy. Its protection is strengthened with improved Kontakt-5/Relikt ERA layouts, additional composite armor on the turret sides and hull front, as well as enhanced underbelly and mine-resistant structures. Mobility is boosted by the 1,130-hp V-92S2F engine, paired with a new transmission and improved suspension, giving it noticeably better acceleration and off-road performance. Overall, the T-72B3M obr.16 achieves much higher survivability and fire-control sophistication while retaining the cost and compact advantages of the T-72 platform, effectively placing it in the “3.5-generation” category of modern main battle tanks.
