History of the development: Jgd.Kmpfr. Scharferfalke AMFK-KF13.369A — light fighter-interceptor aircraft
Background and concept (1972)
After Kaiser Karl IX came to power in 1972, the new strategic course required a qualitative rearmament of the Martorianische Reichsluftwaffe. An analysis of potential conflicts conducted by the General Staff in conjunction with AMFK analysts revealed a critical vulnerability: the lack of a high-speed interceptor capable of reliably intercepting and destroying high-altitude, high-speed reconnaissance aircraft and bombers of a potential enemy before they reached the range of cannon weapons.
The focus was not on close-range manoeuvrable combat (the dominant doctrine in the world at the time), but on the "concept of a first strike at ultra-long range". The new fighter had to have record speed and climb rate, powerful radar for detecting targets beyond the horizon, and the most advanced missile armament. The idea was simple: detect, catch up, strike and leave before the enemy realises what is happening. "A falcon does not fence with a crow — it strikes it from above, swooping down from the sky," was how the Kaiser himself figuratively formulated the requirement at a secret meeting on 10 November 1972.
Start of development (15 November 1972)
Exactly five days after the meeting, on 15 November 1972, the order was placed with the management of the AMFK concern. The work was led by designer Dr Ernst von Heidelberg, known for his work on supersonic aerodynamics. The project was given the internal index AMFK-KF13.369 and the code name "Scharferfalke".
The key technological decision was made at the very beginning: to focus on speed at the expense of super-manoeuvrability.
Trials and tribulations (1975–1978)
The first prototype took to the skies on 17 March 1976. Tests confirmed its phenomenal speed characteristics, but revealed serious problems:
· "Transonic flutter": under certain conditions, dangerous vibrations occurred in the tail feathers. The problem was solved by changing the rudder geometry and introducing an active vibration damping system.
· "Hungry engine": at maximum afterburner, fuel consumption exceeded all design specifications, reducing the combat radius. It was necessary to redesign the engine control system and add the ability to mount larger drop tanks.
· Radar complexity: debugging of the system for simultaneous tracking of six targets and missile guidance dragged on until the end of 1978.
Completion of development (7 March 1979)
On 7 March 1979, the fifth pre-production model successfully completed the final demonstration programme:
· Interception of a high-altitude target at a range of 67 km with a single MSR-Lanze missile.
· Simultaneous tracking of five air targets with simulated launches against them.
· Flight at maximum speed near the ground and at practical ceiling.
· Close combat training with simulated launches of KSR-Flink missiles and use of cannons.
The State Commission signed an act confirming the successful completion of state trials. The development was officially declared complete.
Adoption and service (1 January 1981 – present)
By order of the Kaiser dated 1 January 1981, the Jgd.Kmpfr. Scharferfalke AMFK-KF13.369A fighter was officially adopted by the Martorianische Reichsluftwaffe.
The "Scharferfalke" is not designed for graceful aerial ballet — it is a spear sent from the heavens to deliver a precision strike at tremendous speed and distance. It is a symbol of the new, technologically advanced and formidable power of the Martorian Reich at the dawn of the 1980s.
