After the success of the Model 606A, Aerostyle Aviation was requested to build another variant of the formidable aircraft more suited for air-to-air combat (which included dogfights). In 1954, the first production Model 606B rolled off the assembly line. Its main armament was upped from two 20mm cannons to four 20mm cannons and its weapon pylons were adapted for air-to-air missiles. The cockpit avionics were also upgraded to allow for fire-and-forget capabilities. To make up for the added weight of the equipment, and the need to fly higher and faster to catch Soviet bombers, the engine was replaced with the significantly more powerful AXC-3340-J2 turbofan, which gave the aircraft even better aerial performance (while also keeping maintenance costs low and repair speeds fast). The 606B, nicknamed the "Astro Demon" entered service with many air forces around the world, including the United States, the UK, France, Sweden, Israel, and others. During the Six-Day War, where 606Bs were present and actively combating the opposing forces, they were often mistaken for Dassault aircraft due to their resemblances. The final 606B was pulled from active duty in the Swedish Air Force in 1985, and three 606Bs are currently on display at the Aerostyle Archive Facility in Illinois.
