WIKI:

The North American P-51 Mustang was an American single-engine long-range fighter and escort fighter, used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in 1940 by North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a requirement from the United Kingdom Acquisition Commission. North American Aviation was approached by the Procurement Commission to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Instead of building an older design from another company, North American Aviation proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The NA-73X prototype was launched on September 9, 1940, 102 days after the contract was signed, and flew for the first time on October 26.
