The concept for the aircraft originated in Poland in 1971. The newly founded Zgierskie "Zakłady Lotnictwa Osobistego" (Zgierz Personal Aviation Factory) designed a single-seat aircraft with a 90-horsepower engine for flights over sparsely populated areas or for mail transport. The first O.S.L aircraft were built in 1973 and produced until 1985. A total of 8,900 were produced and shipped worldwide. A military version (ZM01) was also developed, with 12 built for the North Korean army.
