Bradley-Davies Grasshopper

4,755 Alien  5.9 years ago

This was the unassuming 3-axis ultralight that put Bradley-Davies on the map. Designed in house by the two partners, both keen motorcycle racers and aviators, they used the composite/light alloy technologies used by MotoGP teams for their performance bikes. The result was this cheap and cheerful 90mph funplane that is incredibly easy to fly. Equipped with flaps (VTOL Down) that permit takeoffs at 32mph when fully deployed, they really aren't necessary and you can wing it flapless just watching your airspeed instead of bothering about sink rate, AOA and/or relative throttle setting. If you need instructions on how to fly the Grasshopper, stick to bicycles... on second thoughts, not even. Don't leave the house because you are obviously unfit to be in charge of a pair of legs. Now for the rest of the story. Never intended to be much more than a "one-off", an amateur ecologist and keen ultralight pilot fitted a Grasshopper with a whalespotting camera, and a hunting he did go. For photographs. And to tag. And stuff. And that led to... well you'll have to wait and see. To be continued...
