Flight 14 crashed while landing on runway 22R at Newark Airport on July 31, 1997. The flight departs from Singapore with intermediate stops in Penang, Malaysia, followed by Taipei, Taiwan and then Anchorage, Alaska. In addition to the captain and co-pilot, there were three passengers on the plane, including one sitting in the passenger seat.
During the flight, the pilots feared that they would have little stopping distance after landing, and the captain said he wanted the plane to land early on the runway. The plane departed with a thrust reverser not working and the pilots were aware of problems in the aircraft's maintenance log in which the automatic brake did not activate when landing. They also misunderstood the runway data and therefore believed that they had less stopping distance than they actually did.
The landing took place normally until the plane began to touch the ground. The MD-11 touched down, bounced up and rolled to the right. In the second ground collision, about 1,100 feet (340 m) later, the right gear broke and engine number 3 (right wing engine) came into contact with the runway, continuing to roll to the right until the right wing bars broke. The plane stopped on the right side of the runway, lay on its back and caught fire. All five occupants escaped through the cockpit window. The plane was destroyed by fire.
