RUM-139 anti-submarine missile. In the early 1980s, the U.S. Navy tried to replace the RUR-5 ASROC launched on the ground and UUM-44 Subroc launched by submarines with a new type of missile, namely the planned RUM/UUM-125 sea gun ASW-SOW (anti-submarine warfare weapon). However, the "Sea Spear Project" encountered technical and financial difficulties and decided to initially develop only the submarine launch version (UUM-125A). As a temporary anti-submarine weapon for surface ships, a simple derivative model of ASROC compatible with modern MK 41 VLS (Vertical Launch System) is coming out soon. The comprehensive development contract of this type of missile was issued to Goodyear Company in 1983, named RUM-139A VL Asroc (Vertical Launch Asroc). Goodyear Airlines was later acquired by Lolar, and Lolar's defense department was acquired by Lockheed Martin in 1996.
