In 1947, the Luftwaffe instructed Messerschmitt to develop an improved version of the BF 109. The aircraft's weaknesses were its weak landing gear and thin wings, which limited the amount of armament it could carry. So Messerschmitt decided to use the wings of a Focke-Wulf 190A14, replace the engine with a liquid-cooled radial Jumo 222 engine, and extend the rear fuselage. It also fitted contra-rotating propellers to improve its lift.
