A CHALLENGE BY PLANESOFOLD

DEADLINE 31st October 20015

In the early 1920s all aircraft were bass guzzling behemoths of wood and canvas, but in 1923 the Daily Mail (a British newspaper) held a competition for anyone to enter, that competition was for light aircraft.
Because of this, weight was kept at a minimum, engines were small, pilots had to be dieted and most planes were monoplane single seat designs.

THE CHALLENGE
Using period style parts build an early 1920s themed ultralight to compete in the ultimate challenge of building skill. I will judge on a few things 1. Weight 2. Handling (it doesn't have to be great planes of the 20s flew badly don't worry about this one) and 3. Looks, if it looks like a 1920s aircraft and feels like one, you get extra points oh and a bonus one 4. Originality NO REPLICAS replicas of the original aircraft will get lower points!

I've provided you with some parts
The blue square is a structural panel, use this for your fuselage
The triangle is a structural wing for biplanes
A camera (You don't need cockpit inside the plane)
An assortment of struts, the first I recommend you use for a frame
A chair (see requirements for more details)
Wheels (rear needs to have tail skid and NO RETRACTABLES THIS IS 1923)

And three engines from left to right- 16hp 30hp 50hp you can't change the HP but you can change the prop from 2/4 blades (no one has made 3 bladed props yet)

REQUIREEMENTS
You must use the fuel tank provided (fuel restriction only 12 gallons, don't worry these lil engines don't burn much)
You must use wheels provided
NO MODS except the ones provided
EFFORT if you clearly have not put efort into the plane will be disqualified
It has to be 1920s themed (look up 1920s ultralights for inspiration)
It needs to have a cockpit inside with the chair and camera in it! (IMPORTANT)
IF YOU NEED HELP JUST ASK ME

ADVICE
If you think Your plane is too heavy
Make a bleriot style fuselage, just a frame at the rear with covered front

HOW I WILL JUDGE
I will test endurance and control by flying around the bowl as many times as possible, I will time it as well and whoever gets the longest range and the shortest time gets a Prize in this category.

The person with the lowest weight will get a prize

The person who makes the best looking aircraft (I have two judges in mind for this category) will get a prize

Inventive concepts win a small prize

PRIZES

All Entries get an upvote (for your troubles ?? old aircraft are hard to build)

Long distance prize: 5 upvotes on their chosen planes aswell as a shout-out on the results page, BONUS: a modded part provided by an XVI modder

This was almost two years ago? Whoa, that was a long time ago. I forgot whether I entered or not, but If I did, the aircraft was deleted due to account changes by me over the past 2.8? years.

@XVIindustries Will we be doing the second trial the two seater one or no?

    8.5 years ago
  • Profile image

Yes, I've given all you need to create a pretty old plane, the rest is up to skill :) that's why it's a challenge! TOP TIP: don't go too early, not like a 1900s plane like some of the entries are building, whilst they are amazing, they wouldn't have been used in a contest like this, :) good luck m8! @AgDynamics

I'm totally in for this one! When you say no other mods, does that include all other XML edits? Not to the engine, but for details/aesthetics? @XVIindustries

@XVIindustries Do we have to use THAT fuel tank or can we put fuel in the plane like the wings? And still keep the 12 gallons without the tank.

Yes everything about the prop except the horsepower @ElGatoVolador
