About the A321XLR:

In January 2018, Airbus stated that it was studying an A321LR variant with a further increased MTOW, requiring strengthened landing gear. With a lower-density cabin, it was expected to fly almost 5,000 nmi (9,300 km; 5,800 mi). The proposed A321XLR (Xtra Long Range) with a range extended to 4,500 nmi (8,300 km; 5,200 mi) was to be launched in 2019 to enter service in 2021 or 2022. Integrated in the fuselage to save weight, the centre fuel tank was to be enlarged. As of July 2018, about 200–300 nmi (370–560 km; 230–350 mi) of the targeted range increase had already been secured; additional work was needed to achieve the remaining 200 nmi (370 km; 230 mi).

About VH-OGA

VH-OGA is the first (and currently, the only) of 28 A321XLR’s to be delivered to the Australian airline Qantas. Qantas plans on replacing its 737 fleet with the A321XLR due to the XLR’s extended range, improved fuel efficiency and better passenger comfort. Due to the extended range, the airline can go to farther routes on the narrow body. The aircraft is named “Great Ocean Road”, after the 240km stretch of road along the south-east coast of Australia. The registration of this plane (VH-OGA) was also used on a Boeing 767-300, operated by the same airline.

This specific aircraft had its first flight on 8/4/2025, is currently 0.2 years old, and was tested at Hamburg’s Airbus-Finkenwerder Airport (XFW/EDHI) with the test registration D-AXXE. The MSN is 12323.

This specific aircraft has currently been in service with the following airlines:

  • Qantas, since 31/6/2025, with the registration VH-OGA

    • The aircraft’s name is “Great Ocean Road”

    • was ferried XFW-BKK-SYD from 30/6/2025 - 2/7/2025 on delivery.

The aircraft should serve long-range routes with Qantas.
