Designed in January of 1945 as a tank in the 50-75 tonne class, the E-55 Aufklarungspanzer (Reconnaissance Tank), also known as the "E-55 AKP", would have had many modern features. For one, it had the "Vampir" night-fighting equipment, heavily angled armor, and the capacity to carry 8 fully-armed soldiers inside. It was to use the same turret as the E-50 Standardpanzer, fitting Germany's late-war plans for their tanks. It was to have a crew of four, consisting of a driver, a gunner, a loader, and a commander, along with the aforementioned eight soldiers. The engine was mounted in front of the driver, requiring the frontal armor to be more angled. Using the Kwk 7,5cm L/50 cannon, the E-55 AKP would have been able to carry between 50 and 75 cannon rounds, along with the machine gun ammunition. Effective armor thickness on the upper glacis plate would have been around 150mm, 20mm on the sides, and 50mm on the rear of the hull. The turret armor was to be the same as the E-50's. The original plans gave the E-55 AKP a 650hp engine, but proposed engines were the Maybach 900hp and 1,200hp engines. Only two drawings for the E-55 AKP were ever found, and both are held at the Aerostyle Military Archive facility.
