On July 17, 1996, TWA800 departed from New York JFK International Airport and was scheduled to arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. The flight was a Universal Boeing 747-100 with 212 passengers and 18 crew members. Shortly after takeoff, it exploded and disintegrated near Long Island in New York, killing all the crew on board. There were reports that a terrorist attack may have caused the plane to crash, and the FBI joined the investigation. The FBI announced 16 months later that there was no evidence that it was a terrorist attack. After a four-year investigation, the final report was published on August 23, 2000, stating that the airliner crashed because the fuel gas mist in the tank was ignited by sparks generated by a short circuit in the power line and caused the explosion; The impact of the explosion damaged the fuselage structure near the fuel tank, eventually causing the aircraft to disintegrate. The air crash that took place during the Olympics caused huge losses to the global airlines that wanted to make a name for themselves in the Olympic Games, and was acquired by American Airlines in 2001
