Designed as a replacement for the Lancaster (and other conventional bombers), the Vickers Type C and D series of aircraft ended up costing fortunes, even possibly bankrupting the Miles aircraft company. The Type D was designed in 1952 as a possible successor to the Type C. The D.II featured a higher bomb load capability (six 4,000kg bombs as its internal load), longer range, and more (including ejector seats). A single mock-up was completed in 1957, and was put outside of the hangar to test its rain-repellent coating. During this test, a Soviet spy managed to take a picture of the aircraft, and within weeks the Russians had begun developing their counter to the plane. Unbeknownst to them, however, the British had already canceled the program, and had decided to continie with the "Victory" series of bombers.
