The SP 39 A-1 was first flown in December 1939 and entered service in February 1940 with the Krakabloa Air Force. It was one of the fastest fighter planes of its time, reaching a top speed of 540 Km/h (335 MPH).
The aircraft was powered by a 1265 HP M-41E-5 V12 Engine which was well known for its reliability and simplicity. The aircraft had a large wing area allowing it to fly high (although slowly) and turn very tightly. The aircraft was able to reach an altitude of 14500m (about 47600 ft) in high altitude testing and is thought to be able to go higher however it wouldn't be able to maintain its speed due to the lack of a high-altitude supercharger.
This variant of the SP 39 was armed with 2x MG/CF 20mm Cannons with 200 rounds per gun however later variants received more ammo and gun count.
The SP 39 would go on to shoot down more than 150 enemy aircraft in 1940 alone and slowly becoming one of the most successful designs of early WWII. The SP 39 was eventually replaced by more modern designs, and it was re-assigned to ground and sea attack. It was eventually retired in late 1943 and was de-militarized and sold to civilians to fund other projects.
About the Build:
This is the first aircraft I have built and had it sitting around when i saw this challenge. I didn't prioritize this build much since it was mostly complete. It is lacking a lot of things like a proper landing gear storage and livery but if anyone wants to make improvements then by all means, go ahead but make sure to include proper credits.
This aircraft features:
- A (poorly) modeled engine and cooling system which can be seen by opening 2 doors. this can be done by pressing two buttons, one in front of the cockpit windshield and one underneath the aircraft towards the nose
- a modelled cockpit (missing rudder pedals because I'm a noob)
- Modelled control surfaces
- Openable canopy (which can be ejected via a separate activation group)
Activation Groups and some flight details listed in flight instructions.
I hope you enjoy and have a Great day/night.
