Development:
Originally built as a private venture to compete against the Douglas DC-3, the Hills Co. PA-45, a 32-seat airliner was designed for the civilian market but was procured by the military in large numbers across the globe. It became known as the C-45 Chieftain in military service.
Design:
Designed by B. R. Hill, the PA-45 was proven to be a versatile design, which could withstand the pressure of high-altitude flying, rugged unprepared surface landings and cold-,weather operations (with the addition of a winter-preheating pack). The internal structure allowed for a reinforced floor enabling heavier cargo loads. The Chieftain Mk3 (C-45 in military service) was an upgrade of the PA-45, it was powered by a pair of 1,500hp Dinorwic 1600-BT-10C running 4-blade variable pitch Hamilton Standard propellers
The first production variant for the Air Force was the C-45 Chieftain MkI, which was identical to the prototype other than the cargo door being added rather than passenger access. The last 38 built were delivered as Mk3.
