In 1946, the Luftwaffe commissioned Messerschmitt to develop an improved version of the BF 109. Its weaknesses were its weak landing gear and thin wings, which limited the amount of armament it could carry, so Messerschmitt adapted the wings of the Focke-Wulf 190 A5 for the BF 109 K.
