The People's Liberation Army is the Armed forces of the People's republic of China. Contrary to popular belief, the PLA consists of the PLAGF (Ground Force), PLAN (Navy), PLAAF (Air Force) and PLARF (Rocket force, formerly known as the Second Artillery Corps- all branches of armed forces are not separate entities.
The PLA was first known as the Chinese Red army, and was founded on August, 1st 1928- hence the Chinese characters for August 1st to the right of the star.
