AG-1: Landing hook

Wiki

The Vought XF5U "Flying Flapjack" was an experimental U.S. Navy fighter aircraft designed by Charles H. Zimmerman for Vought during World War II. This unorthodox design consisted of a flat, somewhat disc-shaped body (resembling a flying flapjack/pancake, hence its nickname) serving as the lifting surface. Two piston engines buried in the body drove propellers located on the leading edge, at the wingtips.

Notes

Absolute horror to build.
It flies, not well, but it flies.

    The aircraft isn't VTOL nor STOVL, since it requires a runway to takeoff and cannot lift off vertically, and while it can land vertically technically, you're also fighting physics and hoping to whatever god you believe jn that you can keep it upright, until you finally go beneath its stall speed and determine whether its landing on the gear or flipping over
    .
    Its STOL at best, STOVL not exactly and VTOL not at all
    The V-173 theoretically could be STOVL capable, but the XF5U isn't

    @SchmooveBrain somewhat.
    There isn’t a “STOVL” tag.

    The XF5U is in no way a Vertical Take-Off and Landing capable aircraft, STOL yes, VTOL no
