The AF-1 Skyhawk II is the Brazilian Navy’s modernized version of the McDonnell Douglas A-4KU Skyhawk, originally acquired from Kuwait in the late 1990s. Operated by the Força Aeronaval da Marinha do Brasil, the AF-1 was intended for carrier-based operations aboard the aircraft carrier NAe São Paulo and has since undergone significant upgrades to extend its service life and improve combat capability.
The modernization program, led by Embraer, focused on avionics, radar, and electronic warfare systems. The AF-1 now features a modern glass cockpit, Hands-On Throttle and Stick (HOTAS) controls, digital mission systems, and a multimode radar suitable for air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. Although not equipped with guided missiles like AMRAAM or advanced targeting pods, it supports AIM-9 Sidewinders, Mk 82 bombs, and various unguided munitions, ideal for fleet defense, reconnaissance, and strike roles.
Powered by the Wright J65-W-20 turbojet, the AF-1 reaches top speeds of 670 mph (1,078 km/h) and can carry up to 8,200 lbs (3,720 kg) of ordnance. Its compact size and agility make it effective for carrier operations, though carrier activity has been limited since the retirement of NAe São Paulo.
The AF-1B is the two-seat variant used for training, tactical coordination, and lead-in fighter training. Both variants continue to operate from land bases, providing valuable experience and readiness for naval aviation missions.
