The IPA CN-2A is a twin-engine, subsonic multirole fighter/attack aircraft developed by IPA for the Portuguese Naval Aviation. Entering service in 1957, it became the first domestically designed jet capable of full aircraft carrier operations.

Powered by two non-afterburning turbojets, the CN-2A combined reliability with a surprisingly high payload capacity for its size. It featured folding wings for easier hangar storage and was armed with two 20 mm nose-mounted autocannons, supported by five external hardpoints (four under the wings and one under the fuselage).

A standard combat loadout could include:

Two multiple racks of 100 kg bombs, up to 8 per rack;

Two 7-shot rocket pods;

One external fuel tank for extended range.

The CN-2A entered service as the main naval fighter of the Portuguese Navy, but by 1963 it had been replaced in the air-superiority role by more modern and faster aircraft. It remained in service until 1970, fulfilling roles as a light attack aircraft, naval strike platform, and advanced trainer.

The aircraft operated primarily from the Navy’s medium-sized carrier, NRP Infante Dom Henrique.

While never exported, the CN-2A is remembered as a milestone in Portuguese naval aviation, proving the country’s ability to design and operate carrier-based jet aircraft in the Cold War era.
