The F4U was developed by Vaught and first flew on May 29, 1940, and served in the United States Army from World War II to the Korean War, after which the F4U remained in service in some countries until the 1960s. In the Pacific Theater of World War II, the F4U and the F6F were the main forces of the United States Navy, becoming a strong opponent of Japanese fighters. After the war, according to U.S. Navy statistics, the F4U shot down ratio of 11:1, that is, every 11 enemy aircraft shot down only 1 was shot down, with an impressive record.
