Lore

With the increasing demand to modernize its aerial firefighting fleet, Portugal introduced the IPA I-1AM Cegonha in 1990, a direct successor to the original piston-powered I-1 model. While maintaining the same size and payload capacity, the I-1AM underwent a deep structural, electronic, and operational upgrade.

The aircraft is now powered by two 3,000-horsepower turboprop engines, drastically improving its climb rate, reliability, and performance in challenging environments. Thanks to its remarkable STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) capability, it can operate from improvised airstrips, rugged terrain, or directly from water — ideal for missions in the vast Portuguese forested regions, often located in hard-to-reach areas.

It is also fitted with modern avionics based on NATO standards from the 1980s, including secure communications, GPS-assisted navigation, and improved coordination systems for both air and ground crews.

Aesthetically, it received a new paint scheme, better suited for integration into the Portuguese Air Force’s current visual identity, giving the aircraft a more modern and tactical look.

The aircraft features new winglets for improved aerodynamic performance and redesigned floats, now more durable and efficient, which enhance both flight stability and water operations.

While larger models such as the I-1L are deployed in large-scale missions, the I-1AM’s compact, reliable, and versatile profile makes it perfect for fast, precise interventions — remaining in active service to this day within Portugal’s civil protection force.

A total of 70 aircraft were produced. Of these, 25 were exported to Brazil, 10 to Spain, and 10 to France, where they were adapted to national operational needs. The remaining 25 aircraft are currently in service with the Portuguese Air Force, forming the backbone of the country’s rapid-response aerial firefighting fleet.
