The Hills F-56 Rextooth was a single-engine, single-seat fighter aircraft developed by Hills Co. Aircraft Manufacturers during the early stages of World War ll. Conceived in 1941 amid escalating global conflict, the aircraft emerged from a requirement for advanced combat planes capable of countering high-flying enemy bombers.

Development and Prototype:
The prototype, designated XF-56, first took to the skies in late 1941. Initially designed as a high-altitude fighter, the XF-56 featured a robust airframe optimized for operations above 30,000 feet, where it could leverage superior speed and climb rate to intercept threats.
However, evolving wartime demands, particularly the need for versatile aircraft to support Allied bombing campaigns and ground operations, led to a significant role change.
By 1942, the F-56's focus shifted from pure air superiority to bomber escort, close air support, and ground attack missions. This adaptation involved modifications to enhance payload capacity, including hardpoints for rockets, bombs, and additional machine guns, making it a formidable multirole platform.

Powerplant and Performance:
At the heart of the F-56 was the Cyclone Duplex radial engine, a twin-row, air-cooled powerplant that delivered impressive horsepower while maintaining reliability in harsh conditions. This engine choice contributed to the aircraft's substantial weight—but also provided the thrust needed for carrying heavy ordnance and sustaining damage from anti-aircraft fire. Top speeds exceeded 400 mph in level flight, with a service ceiling around 35,000 feet, though its ground attack role often kept it at lower altitudes where its durability shone.
Despite its heft, the F-56's rugged construction and powerful engine made it exceptionally effective. Pilots praised its stability during dive-bombing runs and its ability to absorb hits that would down lesser aircraft.
Note: This is made from a Curtiss XP-62 blueprint with some modifications.
