The Higgins 81-foot PT-6 was a pivotal experimental motor torpedo boat developed by Higgins Industries during the early 1940s as part of the United States Navy's efforts to standardize its PT boat fleet. While the original PT-6 design was based on Sparkman & Stephens plans, founder Andrew Higgins independently developed a superior 81-foot variant (often designated PT-6 (2) that utilized three 1,200 hp Packard 4M-2500 engines, allowing it to reach speeds of approximately 34 knots while carrying a heavy ordnance load. This second iteration outperformed its contemporaries in durability and handling, eventually serving as a design progenitor for subsequent Higgins torpedo boats used throughout World War II. Despite its robust structural strength, the vessel featured a wooden hull with minimal armor, typically relying on its speed and a primary armament of two .50 caliber machine guns and two 21-inch torpedo tubes for coastal engagement.
