Auto Credit Based on Tonnkatu's Messerschmitt Bf-110 G4


Credits to Tonnkatu for the Bf-110. I'm quite fond of the bf-110, so it was a matter of time before I brought a version as extravagant as this one, with 3 BMW 801 engines and a Nachtjäger-style paint job.

History:

During the "Battle of Britain" it became drastically clear that the Messerschmitt Me 110 heavy escort fighter did not live up to its expected task of protecting Luftwaffe's bombers. Due to heavy losses inflicted by RAF fighters, Messerschmitt Me 109 fighters had to take over additional protection duties for the Me 110's too, which in turn diminished their availabilty for bomber escort missions.
One of the reasons for the failure of the Me 110 were the performance parameter of its engines compared to the overall weight of the plane.
By installing a third engine, it was hoped to achieve a more acceptable performance. In order to test these calculations, some Me 110 C and D airframes were accordingly converted, leading to Me 110 K (Me 110 K-2 based on C airframes and Me 110 K-3 based on D airframes).
Installation of a third engine taken from a Me 109 E (Daimler Benz DB 601 A) resulted in an increase of speed, which was countered by the now higher overal weight of the plane (due to the weight of additional engine and the fuel drop tanks needed).
That´s why a further version, the Bf 110 L-8 driven by three BMW 801 engines had been constructed. With a start performance of nearly 5.100 PS vis-a-vis the K-1/K-2 version with 2.970 PS the L-8 version would have been applicable multilaterally, e.g. like a torpedo fighter or heavy destroyer.
Furthermore the changed aerodynamics due to the prop-wash of the third enigne led to vibrations of the airframe, which altered the flight and handling characteristics negatively. Since these problems couldn't be overcome quickly and the Messerschmitt Me 210 (with calculated much better performance data) already in the final stages of develpoment, further tests with the Me 110 K were abandoned.
It is rumored that no Bf 110 L-8 aircrafts had been built.
