Arshima Wick

30 RhapsodyJUN  1.9 years ago

The Arshima Wick was the result of a long forgotten and failed collaboration between Japan and Britain during the first World War. The RAF required a fast and reliable air superiority fighter, and the Japanese were looking to test out a new type of powerful piston engine. The aircraft was assembled in a trainyard in Crewe, before being moved to Cardiff for testing. On the first flight, the tail lifted too far and the propeller shredded itself in the grass. This also caused the plane to flip upside down. The propeller was replaced, the airframe repaired and a second attempt was made a few days later. The second attempt was more successful, but it only barely managed to lift up when taking off, making it unsuitable for shorter airfields. The plane was too heavy to make it a reliable fighter, and only two were built before the British backed out.

The Japanese did experiment further with the plane, this time as a bomber, though it was seemingly jinxed, as during three tests, the payload simply fell from the pylon and even caused a detonation on the last, resulting in the loss of both the second prototype and the pilot. The last aircraft was tossed into the Pacific from a merchant vessel to rot, and the war ended only two months later. It was also an early example of an aircraft to use retractable landing gear, though only the tail wheel, and to the right, which oddly had no adverse effects on aerodynamics.

This plane was inspired by the biplanes of old, but I'm not exactly an experienced plane building person guy. The test flights I put in the little story are based on my own attempts to fly this thing. And yes, the rear wheel retracts sideways. Don't question it.

Still, the plane is airworthy, and is surprisingly stable in the air. Not particularly manoeuvrable, but for someone with fat fingers, I think it does well. The top wing was difficult, noting the fuselage piece in the middle to fill the gap. I decided to mount two machine guns there, as well as a decorative lever. Lever does nothing. Since the cockpit camera decided to yeet itself to the upper atmosphere while building, I deleted it and placed a gun camera just behind the weapons. Also positioned where they are so it doesn't shoot itself down.

The plane is capable of 260kmh, and likely higher, so not exactly period friendly.
