1989 — First Delivery:Lufthansa received its first Airbus A320-200 in October 1989, introducing the aircraft into service on short- and medium-haul European routes. This marked a major step in modernizing the airline’s narrow-body fleet.

Fly-By-Wire Innovation:The A320 was revolutionary for its time: it was the first commercial airliner to use a full digital fly-by-wire flight control system with a side-stick controller instead of traditional yokes, improving safety and handling.

Fleet Numbers:At the end of 2024, the Lufthansa Group (including sister airlines) operated a large fleet of A320 family aircraft — with 63 A320 (classic) aircraft still assigned to Lufthansa itself. Long-Serving Aircraft:The airline recently retired its oldest A320-200 (registered D-AIQS) after 32 years of service, having logged over 67,000 flight hours. It was delivered in January 1993 and flew regularly until early 2025, even being used at different times by Germanwings and in pilot training roles before its final retirement.
